Collin Gillespie's Career-High Performance Leads Suns to Comeback Victory
The Phoenix Suns, known for their ability to bounce back from adversity, showcased their resilience once again. Despite facing a 19-point deficit in the first quarter, they mounted a remarkable comeback, ultimately defeating the Portland Trail Blazers 130-125.
Collin Gillespie had a career-defining night, scoring 30 points (10-for-17) and making eight 3-pointers, matching his previous best. He also contributed 10 assists and a single turnover, which was instrumental in the team's impressive 49% shooting from beyond the arc (20-for-41).
Following a subpar offensive performance on Sunday, where the Suns scored just 93 points, concerns arose about the team's ability to sustain their offense without Devin Booker (right ankle sprain) and Jalen Green (right hamstring injury and left hip contusion).
The game began with a strong start from the Blazers, who, despite losing five straight games and missing All-Star Deni Avdija (low back strain), displayed early energy. They hit six 3-pointers in the first five minutes and quickly built a 17-point lead within six minutes. Portland's dominance was evident, as they scored all 41 of their first-quarter points in the paint, behind the 3-point line, or at the foul line.
However, the Suns' response was swift, even before halftime. They narrowed the gap to 11 points by the end of the first quarter and then took control in the second quarter, outscoring Portland 37-30. The relentless hustle of Jordan Goodwin and the shooting prowess of the guards kept the Suns within a five-point deficit at halftime.
The momentum continued to shift in Phoenix's favor after halftime. Gillespie and Grayson Allen combined for a 12-6 run in the third quarter, with Allen knocking down three 3-pointers and Gillespie adding one. The Suns' shooting prowess was evident as they hit eight 3-pointers in the third quarter, compared to Portland's lone make. This allowed them to take a seven-point lead into the final quarter.
Ryan Dunn further solidified the Suns' dominance in the fourth quarter, converting two 3-pointers to extend their lead to 12 points. Although Portland managed to cut the deficit to four with under 90 seconds remaining, Allen sealed the victory with a stunning step-back 3-pointer.
Allen finished with 24 points, and his performance, alongside Gillespie's, helped offset Dillon Brooks' 3-for-16 shooting night. Goodwin also played a pivotal role, recording 16 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals, becoming the first Phoenix reserve to achieve this feat since Cedric Ceballos in 1991.
Mark Williams, who had struggled in the first quarter, bounced back in the second half, finishing with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Second-chance points favored the Blazers by a margin of 39-23, a statistic that often poses challenges for the Suns.
The Suns' ability to overcome a significant deficit and their resilience in the face of adversity once again demonstrated their strength and determination.
