In a heartfelt farewell, Benaddiction, a cherished breakfast destination in Fresno, has announced its closure after more than a decade of serving the community.
On a recent Saturday morning, the atmosphere was electric as locals gathered to bid adieu to this beloved eatery. "This place has meant so much to us for years, and we wanted to share one last meal here together," shared Madelyn De La Cruz, a devoted patron who has frequented Bennaddiction since its early days.
De La Cruz reminisced about her first visits to Bennaddiction back in 2013 when it operated as a food truck in Downtown Fresno, run by owner James Caples. What began as a personal passion evolved into a well-loved establishment, even earning a feature on our Dine and Dish series in 2022, highlighting its unique charm and offerings.
Caples expressed his attachment to the community he has fostered over the years, noting, "I’ve built a really strong community of regulars and followers who appreciate what we do here. It’s heart-wrenching to think we won’t see them anymore." His culinary creations, particularly the eggs Benedict and pancakes, have garnered a loyal following, but Caples emphasized that his true joy comes from the connections he has made with his customers.
De La Cruz echoed this sentiment, stating, "We have numerous breakfast options and chain restaurants, but Bennaddiction always felt like a piece of homegrown Fresno."
However, circumstances turned dire for the restaurant as it faced significant challenges. Caples shared that the unexpected closure of their original location in 2023, compounded by rising ingredient costs and the repercussions of a government shutdown last year, placed immense pressure on the business.
"I began living on tips alone and stopped paying myself to keep things afloat, but it became increasingly difficult to manage," said Caples. According to the ABC30 Price Tracker, the cost of bacon surged from $5.63 per pound in 2016 to $7.29 ten years later, while egg prices also rose sharply from $2.33 to $3.49. By October 2025, sales had plummeted by 25% compared to the previous year, leaving Caples facing a staggering $800,000 deficit.
As he confronted these overwhelming obstacles, Caples realized it was time to step back. "I just reached a point where I was too exhausted to continue, so I'm looking forward to finding a peaceful job for a while," he explained.
Before closing the doors for good, Caples wants to leave a lasting memory with his loyal customers. "Starting next weekend, we’ll be selling our mugs through a bidding process," he announced, providing a unique opportunity for patrons to take home a piece of Bennaddiction.
As Caples reflected on his journey, he acknowledged the emotional weight of closing a chapter that spanned 13 years. "It’s tough; it’s been 13 years of my life, and saying goodbye is hard."
