However, there would still be allowances for situations involving self-defense and necessary veterinary care.
Should this initiative secure a spot on the ballot and receive voter approval come November, the protections afforded to beloved pets like dogs and cats would extend far beyond the household, potentially covering wild animals, livestock, and even those used in scientific studies. Proponents refer to this initiative as the PEACE Act, which stands for People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions. On the flip side, there is considerable opposition to this initiative, notably from groups such as the Oregon Hunters Association. Critics contend that if passed, this measure would effectively force Oregonians into a vegan lifestyle or compel them to source their meat products from other states. As it stands, the initiative has yet to qualify for the November ballot. The organizers behind this effort must gather at least 117,173 valid signatures by July 2 to move forward.
