The Trail Blazers are reportedly interested in acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, the two-time MVP, according to Jake Fischer and Marc Stein of The Stein Line. This interest comes after Portland was initially intrigued by the idea of a multi-team trade involving Antetokounmpo, aiming to upgrade their roster. However, the Blazers' front office acknowledges that securing Antetokounmpo's long-term extension is an extreme long shot.
The Stein Line duo suggests that a more likely scenario is for Portland to facilitate a multi-team deal, acquiring a different player or players in the process. Rival teams believe that acquiring Blazers guard Jrue Holiday could improve their chances of landing Antetokounmpo's former Bucks teammate. The Blazers also have Damian Lillard, another ex-Buck, on their roster, and both players maintain a close relationship with Antetokounmpo.
Portland holds control over Milwaukee's first-round picks from 2028-2030, acquired in the 2023 trade that sent Lillard to Milwaukee and Holiday to Portland. Holiday was later traded to Boston, contributing to the Celtics' 2024 championship, and was then traded back to the Blazers this past summer. The Blazers also possess some of their own first-round picks and have promising young players like Donovan Clingan.
In terms of assets, the Blazers can theoretically assemble an appealing package for Antetokounmpo in the next five days. However, they can offer even more during the offseason, including further clarity on lottery-protected 2026 picks and the removal of trade restrictions on players like Shaedon Sharpe and Toumani Camara.
