In a startling case that has raised serious concerns about the integrity of healthcare staffing, a 30-year-old Nigerian national, Oluwabunmu Adeleiyi, was found guilty of defrauding the NHS. Living in Cardiff on a student visa, Adeleiyi managed to secure positions as a healthcare support worker at Neath Port Talbot Hospital and the Caswell Clinic in Bridgend, despite having no formal medical qualifications. But here's where it gets even more alarming: she and two accomplices used the same fraudulent IDs to bill the NHS approximately £16,000 per month through multiple employment agencies.
Adeleiyi pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud by false representation. She was sentenced to 10 months in prison for each offense, to be served concurrently and suspended for two years. Two of these counts were linked to her work at the Port Talbot hospital, while the other two were tied to the medium-secure mental health unit in Bridgend. And this is the part most people miss: the fraud was only uncovered when a receptionist at the Caswell Clinic noticed a passport photo on Adeleiyi's ID card, which was suspiciously kept in a plastic wallet.
When confronted, Adeleiyi refused to provide shift documentation, prompting the issue to be escalated to senior management at the Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB). The investigation revealed disturbing details about her behavior during shifts, including locking herself in a room and securing doors in corridors—actions that could have had catastrophic consequences in emergencies. During sentencing, Judge Recorder Mark Powell KC sternly reminded her, 'You put patients at risk... you put staff at risk.' In addition to her suspended sentence, Adeleiyi was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service.
Following the hearing, Neil Jones, lead counter fraud specialist for SBUHB, stated, 'Today's sentence sends a clear message: any fraud committed against the NHS, especially when it targets vulnerable patients or staff, will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.' He revealed that Adeleiyi had obtained fraudulent nursing agency identification from an overseas organized crime group. Fortunately, her interactions with patients were minimal, and a health board review confirmed that no patients were harmed.
