The Wasp: A Revenge Tale Lacking Bite
In the realm of revenge fantasies, Morgan Lloyd Malcolm's 2015 drama, The Wasp, takes a unique approach, but it falls short of delivering a powerful punch. This intriguing premise, however, is not fully realized in director James Haddrell's production.
The story unfolds with a clear power dynamic shift, as Heather, now a wealthy professional, orchestrates a calculated revenge against Carla, who has fallen on hard times. The performances are adequate, but the overall execution feels stiff and unengaging. The first act ends abruptly, leaving the audience yearning for more, while the second half stretches on, seemingly disconnected from the initial narrative.
One of the film's attempts at adding depth involves the use of non-naturalistic elements, such as replaying scenes from different angles and incorporating waspish buzzing to signify impending danger. However, these stylistic choices fade away after the interval, leaving the audience with a sense of detachment. The film's true struggle lies beneath the surface, delving into the long-lasting impact of childhood bullying and the complex emotions it evokes.
The metaphor of the tarantula hawk wasp, which consumes its victims from within, serves as a powerful representation of both the bully's violence and the victim's inner turmoil. The play explores the role of class and privilege in the dynamic between Heather and Carla, shedding light on the broader context of bullying. It raises thought-provoking questions: Can past trauma excuse harmful actions, and can true catharsis ever be achieved through revenge? These intriguing themes, however, are overshadowed by the film's convoluted and unconvincing plot twists.
As a revenge thriller with Hitchcockian aspirations, The Wasp strives to be original. Yet, it fails to deliver the necessary bite and tension. The performances, while competent, cannot compensate for the overall lack of impact and the disconnect between the first and second acts. The film's exploration of the psychological and societal implications of bullying is intriguing but is lost in a web of over-the-top plotting.
In my opinion, The Wasp's inability to fully engage and provoke a strong emotional response is its most significant shortcoming. The film's potential to delve into complex themes is undeniable, but it needs a more refined approach to storytelling and character development to truly leave a lasting impression.
